Halloween is over - What to do with all the candy?

Curious how to handle your child's candy haul?

Here are some of my top tips as a Registered Dietitian

First things first...

Let's acknowledge that this is your child's haul. They worked hard for it.  They have earned it. They are proud and happy. Avoid threatening to throw it way or give it away based on behaviour.

On Halloween

After making sure the candy is safe (read the full post here),  allow your child to enjoy their Halloween haul as much as they please.

Be the keeper of their Haul 🍬

Explain to your child that you know the candy is theirs and you will keep good care of their trick or treat haul.  Reassure them that you will be allowing regular access to their Halloween haul.

What does "regular access" look like?

  • A few pieces served alongside with snack, or as dessert with dinner.
  • Allow another unlimited go at the candy haul

Older kids eventually can manage their own candy haul.

Why is this important?

Being relaxed and matter of fact about sugary treats (just like any other food), eventually helps your own child to be able to be relaxed  and matter of fact about all foods. Evidence shows that being over-restrictive of sweets actually tends to make kids fixate more on these foods, and eat more of them.

I hope this information was helpful!
